WHEN: Day 3, morning

[It's a beautiful morning in this part of Coba! The sun is shining, the birds are singing - or at least they were until a few seconds ago. Suddenly, the city is plunged into darkness again, and the streets start to fill with people dressed in outrageous costumes. There's music in the air and all traffic is stopped for the parade of revellers heading down the street. Anyone from New Orleans might find the spectacle rather familiar, but for anyone else it's still an excuse to party like the night never ended]

[unfortunately, he happens to run right past Damon, who notices and - reaches out to grab him by the back of his shirt. What kind of idiot super speeds his way through a Mardi Gras crowd?

Wait, he knows exactly what kind of idiot. The one he just stopped. Tyler, please]

And where are you going?

[Well, this feels like deja vu. Tyler's not even remotely surprised to hear Damon's voice, or even that tone: for him, a Damon scolding is like a Thursday.

Granted, he's pretty sure he deserves the incoming lecture too.] I don't know. Anywhere but here?

[He's squirming, though with his watch gleaming a little, he's not going to overpower Damon anytime soon.] I didn't exactly ask for a freaking Mardi Gras parade today.

[oh he absolutely deserves it. And as if to give him a prelude, he tugs on the shirt, hard enough to let him know that yes, you've done bad. Bad werewolf]

So you go running at top speed through it? I thought we were supposed to be - oh, I don't know, pretending to fit in?

[another tug] At the very least be subtle about it, Lockwood. I know you know what that means. Or at least I hope you do.

[His scowl just worsens. This definitely feels like a Thursday.] Seriously, Day? It wasn't like I asked the parade to follow me for sixteen blocks.

[Still, he knows when to fold, and when to pretend that he hadn't just goofed and referred to Damon like they're far closer than they really are.] Fine... [SIGH] I'll make subtlety my middle name. Just put me down already.

It wasn't like I asked for it to appear period, but you don't see me running around like an idiot.

[he feels like a babysitter. He even looks upwards as if looking for strength but no, he's mentally cursing a certain history teacher and begging for him to show up to take ove babysitting duties]

I like this version of you. You listen. [and he releases him] You're better off hiding inside, anyway. The parade won't follow you in there.

[Like Tyler would ever listen to Alaric. He listens to Mason and Jenna and Damon, but anyone else? They barely get a nod of acknowledgment, because they weren't the ones who helped raise him.

He snorts, allowing his guard to relax slightly as he glances back at Damon.] Thanks, but I'm seriously starting to doubt that.

[If the parade crashes through the door of the nearest building, he does not care about blending in - he is going to have WORDS with them.] And what do you mean, "I listen?" Of course I listen. He'd kill me otherwise if I didn't.

[see, but it would still be Alaric he wasn't listening to, not Damon. Damon did not like this sudden responsibility; sure, he he did the same thing back home in a sense, but here it felt like he was doing it a lot more already and he did not like it one bit. He wasn't meant to be responsible!]

Who'd kill you? [other Damon? He nods to a bar and leads the way, because it's never too early to have a glass or two of bourbon]

He wishes. Nah, man, I'm talking about Uncle Mace.

[He follows Damon towards the bar, stuffing his hands in his pockets and trying not to sniff at the drunken crowd. God, it really is never too early for a drink.] Where I'm from, you three were like a package deal. You couldn't get him without you or Jenna.

Still kind of are, even though Jenna's married and you're dating... someone. [Dating Bonnie, actually. But Tyler's not stupid enough to discuss that in public.]

[dear god, what kind of world did Tyler live in? At least that's what Damon thinks, and he stops to stare. He can't help it, it's the most ridiculous thing he's ever heard]

You're joking. [he knows he isn't, but it's the first thing he can think of to say] I can assure you that outside of the Twilight Zone, it's the exact opposite. [and there was the little detail of Mason Lockwood being dead courtesy of Damon himself.

He'd keep that to himself, though. With a groan, he pushes into the bar] Do I want to ask who I'm dating?

If I were, it wouldn't be a very funny one. [He shrugs. It's getting easier to acknowledge that his world isn't like the others - even if it does make his interactions with everyone that much weirder.

Also, keeping him in the dark about his uncle's death is probably for the best.]

Nah. You like her well enough and she's crazy enough to like you back. That's... kinda all you really need to know. [He questions Bonnie's taste in Salvatores a lot. First Giuseppe, then Damon, and there were probably scattered witches along the way... but if it makes them happy, he's not going to knock it too much. He thinks.]

Point. Let's just say Jenna doesn't like me, and your uncle and I didn't get along. [he is absolutely keeping Tyler in the dark about that, because he is not going through that again. It's in the past, Mason must have moved on because he never showed up again. Hell, he hadn't thought about the werewolf in a good while]

Right, so I'm dating someone crazy. Good to know. [his immediate thought is Katherine, but it makes him scowl and he wasn't following that thought any further. He approaches the bar and reaches over it, just grabbing a bottle of bourbon as he takes a seat. If the bartender had a problem with that, they didn't say a thing]

[Yeah, he's gonna need some whiskey to process that. A lot of whiskey, because he can't actually picture those three apart.]

Whoa. What'd you do to piss her off?

[He snorts at the thought, waving the bartender over and pulling out his wallet to pay for them both. See? He can TOTALLY blend in. Even if it's only to buy him that muchly-needed drink of whiskey. And some morning coffee, to ensure he'll stay awake throughout this madness.] Not that kind of crazy. Trust me, you'd still be giving her aneurisms.

I'm an asshole. Why else wouldn't she like me? [there was more to it than that. Hell, at some point Elena didn't like him, either] Believe it or not, my charm doesn't work on everyone.

[he gives Tyler a look - he was going to pay, they were being subtle, remember? - but he lets him pay and grabs a glass to pour himself a drink.

- and nearly misses the glass because what?] I would be? Are you implying what I think you're implying?

[He tilts his head at that crack. Sure, his Damon had a biting tongue, and he wasn't exactly the nicest guy around... but he cared too damn much. At least, Tyler's Damon did.

Instead of saying anything, though, he shrugs thoughtfully as he waits for his drinks to be poured.]

I don't know. What do you think I'm implying? That other-you might've been a witch? [Or as other-Damon preferred to be called, a "wizard."]

[he is not answering that without some bourbon burning his throat, nope. He takes a long drink, and pauses before he takes the second to answer]

I thought so. Yuck. [but it comes out mild, almost joking. He could never picture himself as a witch, just like he couldn't picture himself being besties with Jenna or Mason. It just didn't process right, or it processed its way into him making bad jokes about sci fi shows]

[Tyler couldn't exactly imagine Damon as a vampire either, but here he was with living, maybe-not-quite-breathing proof. The daylight ring, the bourbon, the lack of earthy smells...

Still, he laughs, muffling it unsuccessfully with his hand as he accepts his coffee.] Yeah, I'd bet he'd say the same thing. Day used to be like, president of the anti-vampire club.

[He grows quiet, taking a sip of his drink.] He doesn't hate them now, I think, but it got pretty bad for a while.

[he refills his glass, taking another, less desperate drink before he sets down his glass and folds his arms on the bar. He had to wonder if Tyler was deliberately referring to this other, freaky Damon as "Day" to keep them separate. Damon sure was using it as a way to keep them separate]

When I was human, I wanted to be a vampire. [he leaves out the part where he immediately changed his mind upon waking up to find out that Katherine was "dead"] So I really can't picture that.

How bad, though? You can't say something like that and not elaborate, Lockwood. [he was curious. And nosy]

[Where does Tyler even start with Day's vampire hatred... it's been a part of his not-older brother for as long as Tyler's known the guy.]

We'd be here forever. His prejudice was like breathing - you name it, he probably did it. [Headtilt.] Kinda like your world's Bonnie, from what Caroline told me.

That's just damn weird to hear. [he and Bonnie alike? Dear god, he could only imagine the witch's face. Hell, it was probably a similar expression to what he was wearing]

There a particular reason he was like that, or what?

Probably. I don't know the full story, beyond vampires trying to kill Aunt Lei--er, his mom. I imagine that, plus a healthy dose of Salvatore family prejudice, did the trick.

[Tyler's not the guy to ask, and he knows it. Every time he tries to get the picture, Mason or someone else changes the subject.] He's not the kind of guy to blindly hate a whole species, at least not normally.

. . . his mom.

[he very deliberately puts down his glass, all the better to stare. It made sense, in a logical sort of way, that they'd be alive, but hearing it was still just - odd. Wrong. That was a lifetime and a half ago, when he'd last seen his, and his father was the one who killed him in the first place]

No, I'm sure he isn't. Not without a few reasons, I bet. Aside from - that.

[He must've said something wrong. Mentioning Aunt Leila probably had to be it - if Damon was a vampire, then she was probably long dead by now.

That's a sobering thought. Sobering enough for him to actually hold back on drinking the whiskey, and instead changing his order for an earl grey latte.] Yeah. He's got his reasons, I just... don't really know them.

But I can answer a lot of other stuff, like how he grew up.

He can see the slight shift in topics, though, and he's all for latching onto that and not talking directly about family. He picks up his glass again, but doesn't take another drink just yet]

Sure, why not. I bet it's nothing like how I did, but then again - I'm sure there's a good hundred years difference.

[Tyler's not exactly a Damon expert - this is more Stefan's territory - but when you grow up with someone, you remember little things.]

You probably didn't babysit me or Elena, so... yeah. Mason and Jenna used to take turns with him if our parents couldn't find a sitter. It happened less as we got older, but that's kind of how Stefan and I became friends.

[it's so . . . normal. He doesn't think he's done anything close to real babysitting in his life, as much as he jokes about watching them all in Alaric's place. Except maybe Stefan, when they were younger]

Nope, none of that has ever happened. We didn't exactly grow up with the rest of you - I think by time any of you were born, I'd been a vampire for over a hundred years. I forget the exact math. Stefan, too.

He met you when he decided going back to high school was a great idea.
